The situation of coastal erosion and shoreline retreat has occurred seriously with increasing intensity, causing environmental impacts, heavy damage to people’s property and the tourism industry in Hoi An.

By 2023, the erosion had spread over a distance of more than 4 kilometers. A trigger that starts the erosion cascade along the shore is the building of temporary anti-erosion embankments.

A corroded hard dike system is left over by abandoned resort construction projects.

Over 25% of all visitors to Hoi An stay at hotels along the beach. The shoreline retreat also results in a significant loss of tourists, which poses challenges for enterprises and affects Quang Nam's tourism.

Cua Dai beach was formerly a stunning beach with lots of resorts, but the effects of nature have left it barren.

The tourism economy sector has suffered greatly as a result of the long-term closure of a number of resorts and hotels on Cua Dai beach.

There is significant erosion on the Cua Dai beach in front of the resorts. Once a major tourist destination, the Golden Sand Resort & Spa Hoi An has suffered significant damage from shoreline retreat over a decade and is currently closed.

The effects of coastal erosion have also forced several large-scale investment projects that have not yet begun operations to be placed on indefinite hold.

It's a waste that the Fusion Alya Hoi An resort had to cease operations and was abandoned.

Numerous seaside tourism infrastructure are still in grave disrepair. Reviving these tourist locations will require a drastic measure to stop the effects of coastal erosion.

Businesses by the beach, particularly those that provide goods and services for travelers, have also been severely hit.

"I used to ride a motorbike along the sand road from my house to Da Nang when the sea had not yet encroached on the shore," Mr. Pham Luat, a local vendor at Cua Dai beach in Hoi An city, said.

The long, level sandy beaches that used to be the glory of Cua Dai beach are progressively being swept away by the powerful waves, which is causing business to suffer and the number of businesses to gradually decline along with the number of tourists.

Though many lodging establishments have lost everything, they are still making an effort to survive in the hopes that the beach would soon be restored.

In an effort to reduce wave-induced coastal erosion, locals who live close to the coast employ traditional techniques like planting bamboo stakes to fortify weak spots.

Self-defense structures, constructed by locals and small businesses, including bamboo fences, sandbags, rock gabions and concrete, are merely short-term measures that won't hold up against strong waves, which erode with time and lessen the area's aesthetic value.

Upstream construction works have been reducing the ecological functions such as sediment transportation to the estuary.

Sand mining also change the natural sediment flow budget, which have led to a decrease in the amount of sand transported to the estuary.

The project employs comprehensive solutions, including both structural and non-structural, nature-based solutions, in order to prevent erosion and sustainably protect Hoi An coast line.

The hard technical solution (building a submerged breakwater and groins) is applied to stop erosion brought on by waves striking the shore.
